It's back!  The Minnesota Department of Transportation is reporting that road work on Highway 61 near Grand Marais is scheduled to resume again on Thursday, May 6. The work is tied to a larger multi-year project along the North Shore.

The initial traffic impacts will occur from 3rd Avenue West to Broadway and 8th Avenue West to 3rd Avenue West on the lake or south side.  As of May 6, drivers can expect to see a truck detour as well - with truck traffic being routed on County Road 7.  A temporary signal is now active at 5th Avenue West and County Road 7.  Southbound vehicular traffic will be detoured on County Road 7 to 8th Avenue West.  Meanwhile, northbound traffic will have a detour on Wisconsin Street and Broadway Avenue.

Officials with the Minnesota Department of Transportation urge drivers to exercise caution this summer as they anticipate traffic to be heavier-than-usual up the North Shore.  Here are some important safety reminders to remember while driving through work zones:

  • Watch for workers and slow moving equipment
  • Obey posted speed limits.  Fine for a violation in a work zone is $300
