In May 2018, Essentia Health along with Community Action Duluth’s Seeds of Success Program launched the Hillside Farmers Market with the goal of placing healthy options along a bus route and within walking distance of many Central Hillside neighbors. While it was not able to continue in 2020, it will return in June, 2021.

Essentia Health announced the Hillside Farmers Market will return Tuesday, June 15 and will continue every Tuesday through September 28. The market will be open from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. each week in the new Essentia Health downtown Duluth Campus  parking lot, located at 503 E Third Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues East.

Opening day of the market, June 15, will include a live chef demonstration, healthy snack recipe cards, free reusable bags and sign-ups for PoP Club and Community Supported Agriculture distribution. Local vendors will be selling fresh produce, seedling transplants, baked goods, canned goods, meat and more.

Another terrific aspect to the Hillside Farmers Market is that, thanks to Hunger Solutions Minnesota and Essentia Health, SNAP customers’ spending is matched one-to-one, up to $15 dollars per market day, when using an EBT card at the market.  Also, any children under 18 receive free $4 tokens to spend on produce through the Power of Produce (PoP) Club, with funding from Essentia Health and University of Minnesota Extension.

Those in attendance will be asked to follow current Minnesota Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 guidelines. Hand-washing stations, masks and gloves will be available on-site.

It's a welcome return of a farmers market that provides a convenient way for people in our community to gain access to fresh produce and more.
