Major retailers have been struggling in recent years, with brick-and-mortar locations closing across the country as online consumer habits have changed the way companies sell their products.

One of the oldest big brand retailers announced that it plans to close a third of its locations by 2026, and 55 of those closings will happen this year.

Macy's will be closing 55 locations by the end of 2024, and another 100 or so locations by 2026. It's part of Macy's plan to revamp their dwindling business, according to The Daily Mail.

Macy's hasn't announced which locations they plan on closing, and as you can imagine employees are speculating if they will be affected by this.

Macy's Stores In Minnesota

In Minnesota, Macy's has several stores across the Twin Cities Metro Area, including Bloomington, Roseville, Edina, Minnetonka, Maplewood, and Burnsville. There also is a location in St. Cloud.

As of July, there are 519 Macy's stores in the United States. The retailer plans to close the underperforming stores and shift its focus to its more profitable luxury brands like Bloomingdale's and Bluemercury.

Some employees have speculated that their Macy's locations will close by the end of the year, based on perceived neglect at the stores. As some say, they have "been left to rot."

As you are probably well aware, Macy's isn't the only retailer brand facing problems. The Daily Mail reports 2600 store closures in the first four months of 2024. Even giants like Walmart and Best Buy have been shuttering locations.
