Twin Cities Marathon Moving To Mid-October Starting In 2027

If you're an avid runner, chances are you have taken part in this race. It is one of the most popular in Minnesota - and now there's a big change that might impact you.

Of course, we are no stranger to major races. We do live in the land of Grandma's Marathon after all. Many people like to maintain the momentum they've put into training and travel to the cities to take part in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon.

The popular race series always takes place in early October. We all know weather in our region can go either way when fall arrives. It could bring snow or we could have a prolonged summer.

Now, the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon has made a big change, which will go into effect in 2027. It all has to do with the weather.

Twin Cities Marathon Weekend Moving Weekends Starting In 2027

After this year, the race will take place in mid-October, rather than in early October like usual. They shared the news on Tuesday (July 7th), writing that this year's race series will not be impacted. However, the change will go into effect next year.

The weather played the biggest factor here. According to their post, pushing the race weekend to the middle of the month offers better race weather, making it a safer option for everyone. There is nothing worse than running in the heat!

The race weekend will now fall between October 10th and 17th. Organizers said they looked at the average forecast year over year and found that it is simply safer to move the race slightly, writing that even a slight temperature change can have a huge impact on runners.

Another reason for the change? A large portion of runners each year are first timers, and pushing the race date just a bit helps those runners finish what they've put in all the work for, which is definitely understandable.

This is one race I have never taken part in but it is on my bucket list! A few years ago, the race was cancelled because of extreme heat so they are definitely making the right move.
