There's a hidden piece of history near Minnesota's Canadian border that is only accessible by boat. It's a bunker in the middle of the woods that is a surprise to many who encounter it. The words Fallout Shelter are visible on the outside of the door. What's the story here? It gets a little weird.

The bunker is located in Voyageurs National Park in Northern Minnesota. I recently did a story on nuclear fallout shelters that still exist in Minnesota. This by far was the most bizarre fallout shelter on the list. I wanted to do a deep dive and figure out what the real history of this is.

The bunker is reported to be at Hoist Bay on Kabetogama Lake. Hoist Bay was used for logging in the early 1900s. A hoist machine would lift logs out of the water and put them on train cars to transport them to the sawmill in Virginia, Minnesota.

The bunker is actually an old root cellar that was built for the camp. The camp closed by 1930. During the height of the Cold War, the cellar was converted into a bunker.

You can see here on Imgur some boaters checking it out.

I also found a post on Reddit from someone else who visited it. You can see the door from the outside, and it says Vault 33, which people had fun with in the comments.

Vault 33 is a reference to the Fallout universe in Fallout video games and the TV series. Warning, this is a graphic scene, and you could spoil the show if you haven't seen it.

The bunker is still there, although it hasn't been stocked. I've been a frequent visitor to Voyageurs National Park, and I can tell you the mosquitoes would kill you before anything else would. Still, it's a cool piece of history and a little creepy!
