A recent study shows the worst places to live in Wisconsin. Using a certain methodology, this research studied 141 cities in Wisconsin and came up with the 10 worst places. Which city will top the list?

Roadsnacks put together a list for every state. They only considered cities with a population of 5,000 or more. That left 141 cities to analyze.

They make the assumption that these are good things that the general population would like to see in a place where they live:

  • good schools
  • low unemployment
  • low crime
  • nice homes
  • good income
  • high population density (meaning lots of stuff to do)
  • short drive to work
  • good health insurance

Here are the top 5 worst places to live in Wisconsin.

Let's get started. Here are the worst places to live in Wisconsin according to Roadsnacks.net.

What's their beef with Antigo? This town has a population of 8,075, but it has the 50th highest crime rate in the state of Wisconsin. Another big factor hurting them in the study is the high unemployment rate which is the 5th highest in the state.

#4 - Wisconsin Rapids

The downtown area is beautiful in Wisconsin Rapids as the Wisconsin River cuts through it. Once again crime is a problem. According to the analysis, they have a 30% higher crime rate than the national average. Housing issues also are mentioned.

#3 - Beloit

Beloit is right on the Illinois border, and crime is an issue here. You have a 1 in 47.4 chance of being a victim of a property crime. Unemployment is at 6%, which is pretty high. The good news about Beloit is that home prices are lower than other places in Wisconsin.

#2 - Milwaukee

The good news about Milwaukee is that there are plenty of things to do that a big city offers. The bad news is the crime. In Milwaukee, the crime rate is 60% higher than the national average! Yikes! The unemployment rate of 5.9% and housing prices also scored negatively for the largest urban area in Wisconsin.

#1 - Waupaca

The small town of Waupaca came up on the top of the list for worst places to live in Wisconsin. Why?

Once again, it's the crime rate. The statistics say you have a 1 in 33 chance of being robbed in this town. With a town this small, doesn't everyone know each other? Who are you going to rob that doesn't recognize you?

Low household income and a high unemployment rate (5.2%) also affected Waupaca's score.

I personally think it looks like a charming little Wisconsin city.

What do you think?

I grew up in a small town and I'm sure my hometown wouldn't do well on a list, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't still have a special place in my heart. There's something about growing up in a small town that people don't get if they've never experienced it. I'd throw population density out of this survey because so many Wisconsinites like being in rural places. Remember to take these things with a grain of salt. Be proud of wherever you are from!
