Are you able to work from home? The pandemic accelerated changes that were already underway during this phase of the information economy. No, not everyone can work on a laptop (from anywhere) but with roughly 1 in 4 US employees working from home some new and potentially tantalizing opportunities are opening up.

Life at Sea Cruises is launching a 3-year global cruise in November, a voyage that will cover over 130,000 miles across all 7 continents and 135 countries onboard the MV Gemini. Get ready for 375 destinations in 3 years, including over 100 tropical islands. You had me at tropical islands. And you can be on that ship if you're willing to spend a minimum of $29,999 a year for the duration of this 3-year cruise. That entry level price includes all food, alcohol, medical needs, entertainment, laundry, housekeeping, WiFi and on-ship educational opportunities.

Of course your results may vary. Can't live without having an outside balcony view cabin? That will cost $36,999 a year (per person) for a double-occupancy, 3-year grand total of $221,994. Not exactly chump-change, but for people who have the flexibility of working from anywhere there's a WiFi signal and value life-changing experiences, this could be an interesting option. Not sure how this could ever work with school-age kids. No onboard school that I could find. But friends can visit you for no extra charge! The all-inclusive list is here, and it's pretty impressive. And the destinations can be tracked on a special version of Google Earth.

If you're interested (good for you) high-speed internet is provided by Starlink, one of Elon Musk's companies, and there may be tax advantages to being an "International Resident". Not sure what my accountant might say about that...

Sell your home and impulsively spring for a 3-year cruise? A fantasy for most of us. But for young techie couples (without kids) who can work from anywhere, or empty nesters who have some expendable income and want to take a break and see as much of the world as possible in one 3-year burst, this could be the real deal.

And no, I don't get a commission if you sign up. This caught my eye because I have a raging case of wanderlust; my wife and I love to travel. We've been on a few cruises and they can be very memorable: unpack once and your hotel room comes with you as you take in new sights. My hunch: prices may continue to come down, with additional options, ships and itineraries in the years to come.

If nothing else, a 3-year cruise around the world is a wondrous daydream, a reminder that life is short, and there is so much left to see out there.

Luxury Vacations That Cost $10,000 Or Less

I love to travel, and if I won $10,000 from our Cash Cow Contest I would want to spend it on a luxury vacation. Here are a few of the places I'd like to visit.
