Minnesota's third recreational use marijuana dispensary to open will be the closest one yet to some of the state's biggest metropolitan areas, like the Twin Cities, Duluth, and St. Cloud.

While it won't be a short drive for interested parties in those areas, it will be closer than the state's other active dispensary businesses.

Since Minnesota legalized recreational marijuana in 2023, the state has been readying the licensing and regulatory infrastructure with the timeline to start seeing the state licensing businesses to serve as early as 2025. In the meantime, Minnesota's tribal governments have been acting more swiftly to get dispensary businesses up and running.

The first two to open are in Northwestern Minnesota, with the Red Lake Nation opening one in Red Lake and the White Earth Nation opening one in Mahnomen last year. The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe is now readying its own dispensary to open very soon, making for a slightly shorter drive for those in eastern and southern Minnesota looking to purchase.

Leech Lake Band chairman Faron Jackson commented via Leech Lake News on the opening, saying “We are excited to embark on this new journey with the opening of the Sweetest Grass Dispensary by the Leech Lake Cannabis Company. This venture not only represents a new economic opportunity for our Band but also reinforces our commitment to creating sustainable, community-driven business models that benefit our members and the broader region.”
