It's hard to believe that just two day ago we were warm and all enjoying temperatures in the 70's. But, as we all know, the weather in the Northland can dramatically change by the day. Heck, sometimes by the hour!

As we were warned back on that warm Tuesday, the weather would turn colder and snow would be in the forecast to finish the week. As the updated forecasts are released, it appears that is exactly what will happen and there may even be accumulating snow in parts of the Northland.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service in Duluth verified that snow would be heading our way, with the best chance for accumulating snow of over 1" to be found north and northwest of the Twin Ports area.

The snow is expected to return Thursday night and linger into Friday night.

Justin Liles, Chief Meteorologist with our media partners at WDIO-TV, shared a similar forecast Thursday on his official Facebook page.

A mixture of rain and snow is possible from now and through midday friday. Some light accumulations are possible on grassy surfaces. Especially north away from the lake.

While this certainly doesn't qualify as a snowstorm, it will be a harsh reminder that anything can happen in October and more significant snowfall totals may be coming sooner than many people in the area want.

The good news is that in the extended forecast, significant snowfall is not predicted, but sunshine is expected to return.

Here is the WDIO extended forecast for the Twin Ports Area:

  • Saturday: Mostly cloudy. Slight chance for a snow or rain shower in the evening. High 45. W wind 5-15 mph. Chance of precipitation: 20%
  • Sunday: Mostly cloudy and breezy. Slight chance for snow or rain showers. High 42. NW wind 10-20 mph. Chance of precipitation: 20%
  • Monday: Partly cloudy and breezy. High 41. N wind 10-15 mph.
  • Tuesday. Mostly sunny. High 44. NW wind 5-10 mph.
  • Wednesday: Mostly sunny. High 50. W wind 5-10 mph.

If the light snow accumulations do anything this week, they will likely get people motivated to make sure they are prepared for when the heavy stuff flies across the Northland.
