Monday January 18 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and celebrations all over the state of Minnesota including Duluth will be held virtually. The day kicks off with the 31st Annual Martin Luther King Jr Celebration Event being broadcast from St. Paul with a Pre show event at 8:30am followed by an MLK breakfast at 9am. The theme of this years events "Our Rising Voices" and  "Where do we go from here:  chaos or community?" which is the title of Dr. King's final book - published after his death in 1968. The Duluth NAACP will be holding a virtual rally from 12:00-1:30pm on January 18. To tune into the Live stream celebration in Duluth Click Here.

According to the Duluth NAACP website the rally includes:

  • Daniel Oyinloye and Salaam Witherspoon, emcees
  • ChaQuana McEntyre, CEO of Family Rise Together and Najen Enterprises
  • Duluth City Councilor Janet Kennedy speaking about Duluth’s African Heritage Commission
  • Dr. Olihe Okoro talking about work from the Duluth NAACP Health Equity committee to promote COVID-19 safety and understanding of vaccinations
  • Duluth City Councilor and AIM member Renee Van Nett discussing efforts to address homelessness through creating yurt communities
  • Music from Diona Johnson and Henry Banks
  • Awarding the Drum Major for Peace Award

The Twin Ports Tribute will be interpreted into American Sign Language.

Thankfully through technology this day can still be celebrated with family and friends even with the pandemic causing so many other events to be canceled. Thank you to everyone involved that helped coordinate these events.
