The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has updated their already in place burning restrictions for several counties throughout the state. The ongoing drought has brought wildfires to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and other locations. Burning permits have not been allowed for some time. However, starting on Tuesday July 27 new restrictions are even banning campfires with or without a ring on Minnesota DNR managed land.

For our Northland area, that includes all of our counties.

Under these restrictions:

  • No campfires are allowed for dispersed, remote, or backcountry camping on all lands.
  • No campfires with or without a ring are allowed on Department of Natural Resource managed land. That includes campsites, cabins, picnic, and other day use areas. Camping stoves are permitted.
  • Non- DNR managed land is permitted in established fire rings with homes or private businesses such as campgrounds. However, you are urged to use extreme caution and check with a site manager.
  • No fireworks may be ignited in any public or private land.
  • There will be no burning permits issued for brush or yard waste by the State.

It doesn't end there. The DNR is also temporarily barring all recreational fires on DNR land in the western portion of Roseau and all of Douglas, Kanabec, Kittson, Mille Lacs, Otter Tail, Pine, and Pope counties. Those counties are not subject to the other restrictions for the counties listed before.
