Drive-In Movies Experience Coming To Minnesota's Mall of America

Even if you've never been to a drive-in movie, there's something fun and nostalgic about the idea.

While the number of places to see a drive-in movie around Minnesota has dwindled over the years, there is a new option for a limited time coming to the Twin Cities area this year.

The Mall of America recently announced a drive-in movie series they're calling "Movies at the Star", which is kind of a play on the concept of "movies under the stars" that is often used to describe the drive-in movie experience.

The Mall of America's three-date outdoor film series will feature a selection of fun blockbuster films along with pre-show activities and much more, shown in the North Lot in front of the Bloomington mall.

Among those pre-show festivities, there will be music, lawn games, photo opportunities, and food trucks to enjoy before the feature film of the night starts.

When it comes to movie-watching time, there will be two ways to experience the film.

Two ticket options, two ways to watch the movies

One of them will be the classic drive-in, watch-from-your-vehicle experience. For $25 ($28 after online processing fees), you can get a car pass for up to 6 people (in that car). The ticket includes a parking spot, admission for up to 6 people, and access to the food trucks and pre-show activities.

The other viewing option will be from the "Lawn Lounge". Lawn Lounge passes are $7 per person ($8.50 after online processing fees) and include a provided lawn chair and access to the food trucks and pre-show activities. This will all happen from a special "exclusive grassy lawn".

What movies are being shown during these MOA movie nights? When are they?

The first of the three nights is Saturday, August 22, when the film Top Gun: Maverick is shown. The event opens for this date at 7:30 pm, with the show starting at 9 pm.

The second film will be shown on Saturday, September 19, when the movie The Mighty Ducks is shown. Gotta love the local connection, right? The event opens for this date at 7 pm, with the movie starting at 8:30 pm.

The final of the three films will be Saturday, October 17, when Hocus Pocus will be shown. The event opens for this date at 6:30 pm, with the movie starting at 8 pm.

If the weather is uncooperative, they will reschedule for the next evening using the same schedule times for the rained-out date.
