New Bridge & Trail Segment Opens On Minnesota’s North Shore

The Minnesota State Park & Trails announced some exciting news for the North Shore. A brand new segment of the Gitchi-Gami State Trail is open now for people enjoying the scenic views of waterfalls and Lake Superior.

The new segment is 4.5 miles long and includes a brand new timber-arched bridge at the Fall River. The bridge is supported by cables hanging from the arch. It also has bump-out platforms on each side for people to view the waterfall or Lake Superior.

The Gitchi-Gami State Trail is a project that when completed will be an 86-mile paved trail that will connect Two Harbors to Grand Marais. At this time, several segments totaling 33 miles have been completed. That includes this section near the Fall River.

The new segment can be found specifically between the Judge C.R. Magney State Park, and Cascade River State Park. The bridge crosses the Fall River.

The new 4.5-mile segment goes from Grand Marais to the Cut Face Creek State Wayside Rest.

The North Shore is home to arguably the most beautiful views in the entire region. From Two Harbors to the Candian Border there are at least 16 waterfalls. Most of the drive on the scenic highway has views of Lake Superior, with many beaches and areas to pull off and rest.

The Gitchi-Gami Trail will be a new way to travel nonmotorized from Two Harbors to Grand Marais when it is done.

What many tourists to the area don't realize is that they have to travel much further past Duluth before you hit the waterfalls and breathtaking views. Recently I had a tourist ask me where the North Shore Scenic Drive is while we were standing on it because he wasn't aware that the waterfalls start after Two Harbors.
