UPDATE: Superior Fuel Company Provides Update On West Duluth Fuel Tank Causing Explosion Heard Around Twin Ports

UPDATE: 3:45 pm 9/14/26: The location of the origin of the explosion has been confirmed by the team with Superior Fuel Company at their West Duluth facility.

In a social media post on Monday afternoon, they explained that a fire occurred involving one of their gasoline bulk tanks, which led to the loud explosion heard around the Twin Ports area.

Superior Fuel Company says the tank had already been taken out of service and disconnected prior to the explosion, as it was being prepared to be moved to another location.

While Superior Fuel Company initially said "everyone is okay", subsequent reports say at least one person was injured during the incident. The status of the individual has not been disclosed at this time.

Superior Fuel Company says they are still working to determine the cause of the explosion, since the tank was already out of service.

They say that the incident will not impact their ability to service customers.

While the scene has calmed down as of 3:45 pm on Monday afternoon, flames coming from the fuel tank in question, as well as a thick plume of black smoke, were seen during the response from emergency crews.

A loud, thunderous explosion sound was reportedly heard around 1:30 pm on Monday afternoon in West Duluth, with the sound of sirens heard in the area shortly after.

While limited information is available at this time from officials on the scene, there is a sizable emergency response presence in the area of West Superior Street near Carlton Street, not far from Clyde Ironworks.

Our news partners at FOX 21 are reporting that the noise and subsequent plume of smoke in the area are the result of an apparent fuel tank fire at a business in the area.

Photos from the scene appear to show a plume of smoke from the Como Oil facility between Michigan Street and West Superior Street near 30th Avenue West.

Meanwhile, Northern News Now is reporting that law enforcement is asking the public to stay away from the area during the emergency response. If you need to travel through the area, you are asked to follow an alternative route.

As of 2:30 pm, there are no reports of any injuries or fatalities, and additional details about what is going on are not currently available.
