If you're expecting a refund rather than paying in taxes this year, congratulations!  Now all you have to do is wait patiently to get that refund.  How long does it take?  Is there any way to track your refund?  Well, I'm glad you asked, because there is!

The IRS says you can generally expect your (federal) refund in less than 21 calendar days after the receive your tax return. But that's a pretty big window.  I'm sure they were tired of being asked that question so they've put an easy tool on their website to help you track when your refund should be deposited.

You'll need to know:

  • Your Social Security number (or ssn of your spouse if you're not the first one listed on your return)
  • Filing Status (Single, Married-Filing Joint Return, Married-Filing Separate Return, Head of Household or Qualifying Widower)
  • Refund Amount

Then you're ready to Track Your Refund!
