Duluth is one of those cities that depending on who you ask, they either love it or hate it. Like in every city, there are some cons that are making people want to get out of here!

I was born and raised in Duluth and now that I have kids of my own, I'll probably end up staying. There are a lot of pros living in our beautiful city. Even though our four seasons are short winter, a month of hot sweaty weather, changing of the leaves, and long winter. A lot of people tell me they are trying to move away from Duluth and here are some of the opinions I've gathered.

    Cost Of Living

Finding affordable housing in Duluth can sometimes be hard to find. I went from living with my parents to just buying my first house. With my mortgage and utilities, it was still less than any nice apartment I could find in the area for a small family. But even with that, it can be hard finding the right neighborhood that fits your budget as well. Plus the cost of living has gone way up too. I purchased my house four years ago and if I were to buy it today, I'd be spending at least another $50k, if not more.

    The Fish Bowl Effect

I hear this a lot. Duluth gets called a fish bowl because once you're here, you never leave. I feel like this has kind of happened to me. Don't get me wrong, I love my hometown and I'm proud to say I'm from Duluth. But I always had dreams of getting out of this town and doing more. Here I am staring down at my late 20's never really leaving the area.

Weather is a hot topic in the Northland. When it's hot, it is sweaty muggy hot. Then when it's cold, I'll walk from my house to my car and automatically have icicles hanging from my facial hair. It's even crazy to think how much colder it is here in the winter compared to the cities where its just a 2 1/2 hour drive away.

    Limited Shopping Opportunities

Compared to other cities, I feel like we don't have all the shopping opportunities we could have. We also have a had a lot of stores close the last few years which makes shopping a litter harder too. I never thought I'd say I miss Kmart, but living in west Duluth, I didn't realize how nice it was to have when I needed to run somewhere quick and I didn't want to go up on the hill.

    Age Difference

Duluth seems to be a mix between college kids and elderly people. Yeah we have some great colleges in the area and some great places for the elderly. But if you're not in the in between ages, you're kind of outnumbered.
