
City Of Duluth Announces New Street Project That Will Include ‘Several Road Closures’
The City of Duluth is alerting the public to a lengthy new project set to start soon that will create some significant traffic impacts.
In a press release about the new 6th Street reconditioning project, city officials are warning the public that the first phase of this monthslong project will include several street closures.
With the project set to start in mid-June, here's what you need to know.
Where is this new Duluth street project?
As you can see in the map above, the impacted area is 6th Street from the area near Essentia St. Mary's on 2nd Street all the way up to the intersection with Mesaba Avenue in Duluth.

The specific closures and traffic impacts will change over the course of this road construction project. Here's what to expect during the first phase as the project gets going.
What will the initial traffic impacts be for this project?
During the first phase of this project, the two areas marked in red on the map above will be closed to traffic. They are:
- Ninth Street between Sixth Avenue East and Seventh Avenue East
- Tenth Street between Central Entrance and Sixth Avenue East
In addition, the outside lane in both directions on Central Entrance will also be closed as needed between Mesaba Avenue and Sixth Avenue East, as well as on Sixth Avenue East from Ninth Street to Second Street.

When does this project start? How long will it last?
The City of Duluth says work will begin on Wednesday, June 11, with the first phase expected to be done sometime in July of this year.
The whole project is anticipated to be wrapped up by October of 2025.
What is being done during this project?
Phase 1 of this project will include the replacement of lead service line, repairs to curb and sidewalk along the route, and updates to traffic signals.
Following the completion of this first phase, city officials say other work to be completed with this project includes:
- Construction of a center median island on 6th Avenue East between 5th Street and 9th Street
- Traffic signal improvements
- Street resurfacing of 6th Avenue East from East 2nd Street to East 9th Street, as well as Central Entrance from 6th Avenue East to Mesaba Avenue
- Lane reconfiguration to enhance safety and mobility.
City officials say they will provide updates about the project and traffic impacts as the project moves through the various phases of completion.
