While this spring has been a bit of a temperature rollercoaster (as it often is in the Northland), temperatures continue to trend upward, and signs of springtime continue to pop up.

A number of seasonal businesses are already open for the 2026 warm weather season, and in what seems like a new springtime tradition, the "I Heart Duluth" sign has been moved back outside after a winter indoors at the DECC.

Another one of those signs of springtime is the return of paid parking in Duluth's Canal Park area.

During the non-peak tourist months, locals (and hearty visitors who don't mind braving colder temperatures) can enjoy heading into Canal Park and parking at one of a number of lots without needing to pay.

That seasonal change is about to swap back the other direction, shifting back to paid parking ahead of the busy summer tourism season. The lots that have been free through the winter season are a total of 7 different parking places in Canal Park operated by Duluth Parking. They are:

  • S - Lake City Lot (DEDA) - 376 Canal Park Drive, Duluth, MN
  • T - Lighthouse Lot (DEDA) - 510 Canal Park Drive, Duluth, MN

If you've been in Canal Park recently, you've undoubtedly seen signs letting people know the free ride's almost over at these lots. As the signs warn, free parking in these lots will end this week, with paid parking beginning on Friday, May 15, 2026.

If you're curious, the rates for these lots do vary a little from location to location.

The Lake Place Lot, Lake City Lot, Lighthouse Lot, and Northwest Iron Lot all advertise a $12 daily rate.

The Sculptured Wall Lot only offers an 80-minute maximum parking option for $0.75, and the Steam Plant Lot and Irvin Lot are not available for public parking until after 4:30 weekdays, offering $1.00 per hour rates after 4:30 pm and for weekends.
