Drivers will encounter some temporary closures along I-35 near the Twin Ports Interchange (Can of Worms) project on Thursday, December 30.  Impacts to the northbound lanes will only include one lane of traffic, but both lanes of the southbound stretch near 27th Avenue West will be completely closed.

According to details released by the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the temporary closures are needed to allow work crews in to fix damage and realign a concrete barrier in the established work zone.

The temporary closures will start at 12:00 AM (Midnight) on December 30.  MNDOT anticipates the work being finished within about an hour of time.

During the closures, there will be a signed detour in place.  Here are the details about the lane closure impacts for both directions of traffic and the necessary detour:

  • Southbound I-35 - near 27th Avenue West:  Both lanes of traffic southbound will be closed.  Traffic will be detoured off of I-35 - routed up and down the ramps at 27th Avenue West.
  • Northbound I-35 - near 27th Avenue West:  The left lane of I-35 will close. Because there will be a remaining lane (right lane) of traffic still open, no detour is needed on the north side of the road construction project.

While the visible work along the Twin Ports Interchange project has slowed somewhat for the winter off-season, there is progress still being made.  The multi year road construction project started this past summer and is anticipated to wrap up on 2024.  Complete details about the scope of the work are available on the Minnesota Department of Transportations website.
