A Minnesota cop is lucky to not be seriously injured after a distracted driver ran a red light and broadsided his police car.

The New Hope, MN officer joined officials from the Minnesota Department of Public Saftey for a press conference to draw attention to the problem of distracted driving.

The driver of the silver sedan admits that she was bending over to get a drink and took her eyes off the road for just a few seconds, enough time to cause a serious accident.

Neither the driver or the officer were seriously hurt in the accident, but it doesn't end that way for many accidents involving distracted driving, on average 53 people die each year in Minnesota due to distracted driving.
