WATCH: Minnesota Photographer Captures Breathtaking Lake Superior Sea Smoke Aerial Footage
While most Minnesotans found themselves doing what they could just to get through the arctic blast of frigid temperatures we got in mid-January, a brave few ventured out to capture the unbelievable beauty Minnesota's winter season can offer.
Winter's meaner side (brutal temperatures, snow, or ice) can make for some stunning sights across Minnesota, and the North Shore and Lake Superior are probably some of the best places to see it all.
When temperatures go subzero, open water on Lake Superior can create something called sea smoke. This beautiful rising "smoke" from the lake is caused by evaporating water rising from the warmer water's surface into the frigid air above it.
In times when conditions are right, a few brave people will go out to capture this beauty either in photos or video. I've been one of those people on more than one occasion. Yes, it is cold and hard on equipment, but the results are stunning!

Check out one of my shots in Duluth's Canal Park during the subzero temperatures we saw on the morning of the Winter Solstice, right before Christmas a few weeks ago.
Now, I'm certainly not the only one to venture out into the cold. Another Duluth photographer got some incredible video footage from above, using a drone.

Lloyd Fisher shared a video on his YouTube channel that blends some relaxing music with almost otherworldly footage into a neat viewing experience you really need to watch on the biggest screen you have available.
The footage, shared on YouTube a few days ago, is almost hypnotic. Watching the sea smoke dance and swirl from above, seeing chunks of ice and even ducks on the water as the drone navigates along the Lake Superior shoreline and above the lake is absolutely breathtaking!
Kick back, relax, and enjoy!
