Duluth Kicking Off First Ship Contest

Visit Duluth and the Duluth Seaway Port Authority will team up again for the 2019 first ship contest.

Starting on March 1st you can go to visitduluth.com/firstship to submit a guess when you think the season’s first ocean-going ship, or “saltie,” floats under the Aerial Lift Bridge.

Guesses must include a date and time, the first and second place winners will get a Duluth getaway, including lodging, gift cards to local restaurants, and passes to several attractions.

More than 2,500 people submitted entries last year. And to help you formulate a guess, the earliest ship ever to arrive was March 30th, 2013, and the latest to arrive was May 7th, 2014.

The first ship contest has been a thing since 1984. The first contest helped celebrate the 25th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Seaway.
