City Of Duluth Announces Return Of ‘Name A Snowplow’ Contest

You might not want to think about it, but the snowy season is arriving quickly. Heck, this morning there were flurries in parts of the Northland. As winter looms, the City of Duluth is announcing the return of its "Name A Snowplow" contest.

Last fall, the City of Duluth announced its inaugural plow truck naming contest, inspired by the likes of MNDOT's annual contest, which they have been doing for years.

Duluth's contest offers a couple of unique local twists - and an actual prize of sorts, unlike the contest MNDOT operates each year.

The second annual Duluth Name A Snowplow contest will once again offer a reward for coming up with the winning name of this year's campaign.

Here's how this year's contest will work, and what you can get if you submit the winning name:

Name Submissions Period & Narrowing The Field Of Submissions

Name suggestions are being accepted now through October 29 via the City of Duluth's Snowplow Naming Contest page. Names need to be under 25 characters in length, no more than three words.

City officials also ask that names be appropriate, not containing inappropriate language or profanity. They will also not accept names of the following types:

• Politically-inspired names, slogans, phrases, or plays on the names of politicians
• A person's name
• Names that are trademarked, including references to companies, TV/movie characters or names, etc.

After the submission window ends on October 29, City of Duluth staff will narrow the field of entries down to 10 finalists for voting on October 31.

Voting Period & When Results Will Be Revealed

The City of Duluth will unveil the 10 finalists on November 3, opening up voting to run from November 3 through November 7.

After the voting window closes, the winner will be notified on November 10 and be alerted to their prize for submitting the winning name.

What Does The Winner Get?

The person submitting the winning name for the 2025 Duluth Name A Snowplow contest will get a prize package of a few different items. They include:

• Getting to take a photo with the newly-named plow and its crew
• Getting to ride in the newly-named plow in the 2025 Christmas City of the North Parade on November 21
• "Unlimited bragging rights," as the city explains on its website.
