A Duluth, Minnesota teacher is facing a criminal sexual conduct charge with an alleged former student.

The Duluth Police Department sent out a press release on Tuesday, May 22nd that said that they arrested Karla Winterfeld, 33, on probable cause for 3rd degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.

Winterfeld was in court Wednesday morning and her charge was changed to first degree criminal sexual conduct. According to CBS 3 Duluth, Winterfeld's defense asked for supervise release but was denied and she is being held on $100,000 bail.

CBS 3 also reported that Winterfeld asked for a public defender but the judge ruled that she made too much money for one.

Law enforcement has said that evidence collected includes text messages and photographs between Winterfeld and the alleged victim. Winterfeld was named to the Duluth News Tribune '20 under 40' in 2016, the article has been blocked off as of Wednesday afternoon.
