Officials with St. Louis County are alerting the public to the potential for significant delays at a busy Duluth intersection, encouraging drivers to consider an alternate route following an incident on Monday afternoon.

During the accident, the electrical service pole and controller cabinet for the intersection's traffic signal system were destroyed. This damage has made the stoplights at the busy intersection inoperable until repairs can be made.

County officials say the intersection of West Arrowhead Road and Haines Road serves about 24,000 vehicles each day, which means a large amount of traffic will be impacted by the temporary lack of traffic control lights.

As a short-term traffic control solution, stop signs have been placed at the intersection. St. Louis County officials warn this will likely lead to traffic backups and delays due to the flow of traffic being significantly slowed by the temporary solution.

Motorists are encouraged to find an alternative route if possible not only so they can try to avoid any backups, but also to help mitigate the congestion.

How long will this issue last?

St. Louis County officials say they anticipate that it could take at leas through the end of this week, if not longer, to restore traffic control lights at the intersection.

The county says they are working with traffic partners to find what they call "alternative sources" for replacement parts to try to cut down on the amount of time it takes to get the stoplights back up and running.
