Northland motorists traveling both northbound and southbound on I-35 Monday will encounter the start of lane closures near the infamous Can Of Worms.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, lane closures will occur beginning Monday, October 19, at 27th Avenue West and near the Garfield Avenue overpass in Duluth.

Lane closures beginning on October 19 will remain in place for approximately 3 to 4 weeks during construction of median crossovers on I-35. Once the crossovers are complete, I-35 will be returned to two lanes each direction with periodic daytime lane closures to facilitate replacement of the 27th Avenue West Bridge this winter.

While completion of the entire Twin Ports Interchange project was pushed to as late as 2028, there will continue to be work done leading up to that estimated completion date.  If more funding becomes available, the project could be completed earlier.

Motorists will see even more things happening next spring when the project moves forward with I-35 traffic in single lane configuration. In the fall, 2021, northbound traffic will remain on I-35, and southbound traffic will be moved to Lower Michigan Street as planned.

The Twin Ports Interchange Project, which will reconstruct the I-35/I-535/Hwy 53 interchange, looks to improve safety by:

  • Providing a new conventional design
  • Relocating all exits and entrances to the right side of the roadway
  • Improving merging sight distance and eliminating merge conflicts
  • Eliminating weaving problems near the interchange
  • Providing lane continuity for through I-35 traffic
