Just over a month ago, Aaron Rodgers clearly stated his desire to be traded to a new team for the 2023 season. In an appearance on the Pat McAfee show, Rodgers detailed his frustrations with the Packers organization and desire to play for the New York Jets.

After that declaration, there were some talks between the Jets and Packers, but things largely remained in a stalemate as Green Bay reportedly wanted more than the Jets were willing to give up for the 39-year-old quarterback.

As we enter the week of the 2023 NFL Draft, rumblings of talks getting back underway between New York and Green Bay surfaced once again.

Sunday afternoon, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport tweeted that trade talks had resumed after a couple of weeks of "dormancy".

Rapoport suggested yesterday that a deal was not "imminent", but things clearly changed quickly as just over 24 hours later, the teams have reportedly reached a deal.

The terms of the deal, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, see the Jets getting Rodgers and two draft picks, while the Packers get a haul of picks from the Jets.

The reported terms are as follows:

The New York Jets get from the Packers:

  • Aaron Rodgers
  • Pick #15 in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Pick #170 (5th round) in the 2023 NFL Draft

The Green Bay Packers get from the Jets:

  • Pick #13 in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Pick # 42 (2nd round) in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Pick # 207 (6th round) in the 2023 NFL Draft
  • Conditional 2024 2nd round pick that becomes a 1st round pick if Rodgers plays 65% of the Jets offensive plays in the 2023 season

This brings a conclusion to the month plus of uncertainty after Rodgers made his desires known about wanting to leave Green Bay. It also marks the second time in the last 15 years that the Packers have traded a Super Bowl-winning quarterback to the Jets.

Of course, the Packers traded Brett Favre to the Jets in 2008. The haul was considerably smaller in that trade, with the Packers getting a conditional fourth-round pick (which became a third-rounder) that they eventually traded to the Patriots to move up and get Clay Matthews.

This deal to land Rodgers has a lot of additional pieces, with several picks involved.

Speculation on what number Rodgers will wear is already underway. Adam Schefter reports that Hall of Famer Joe Namath already gave his approval for Rodgers to wear #12 in New York, but Schefter reports Rodgers will likely wear #8, which he wore in college when he played at Cal.

The deal will now set the table for the Packers to fully lean into Jordan Love and to make some acquisitions in this week's NFL Draft, with an improved first-round pick and additional later-round picks.
