A Sizable Paving Project To Impact Hwy 61 Travel In Duluth

It's hard to keep up with all the road construction projects in the Northland, but as summer gets close we will certainly do our best to keep you informed so you can plan your travels.

For example, the Minnesota Department of Transportation recently warned motorists to expect delays when traveling south of Duluth on I-35. Also, those traveling into the Twin Cities area were told to expect a notable traffic shift on a portion of I-94.

It seems that each week there are new announcements of road construction projects impacting travel, so why should this week be any different?

MnDOT Announces Project Ready To Begin On Highway 61 Near Duluth

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is ready to begin a $2.8 million project on Highway 61 from 0.12 miles north of Superior Street to McQuade Road.

The project involves milling and overlaying both northbound and southbound alignments, several culvert repairs, and guardrail installation where applicable.

Travel Impacts Are Scheduled To Begin On May 28

According to MnDOT, pavement reconstruction will begin on May 28. Project work includes grading and bituminous mill and overlay on both northbound and southbound lanes.

Motorists traveling in that area can expect single-lane traffic in each direction through mid-July. The median crossovers at Lakewood Road and McDonnell Road will be closed for short durations during the project time for culvert replacement. Traffic will be directed to the nearest open crossover as needed.

MnDOT reminds motorists to always drive undistracted, avoiding using cell phones, and mobile devices, adjusting the radio, and even eating while in work zones.
Drivers should be patient and expect delays, especially during peak travel times. Also, remember to give workers room to complete their work safely.
