Extreme Heat Watch In Effect For Most Minnesota Counties

Summer is about to heat up in the Northland! It's been a pretty mild summer so far, which comes after a fairly mild winter and spring.

We have had a few hot days here and there so far but we haven't had a big or long-lasting heat wave in Duluth. That's about to change.

A major heat wave is expected to hit our neck of the woods soon - this weekend! Make sure you pop your air conditioning unit into the windows sooner rather than later.

This isn't your average heat wave either. Things will become dangerous at times. Here's what you need to know, which areas will be impacted and how long the heat wave will last.

A Dangerously Hot & Sticky Weekend In Store For Minnesota & Wisconsin

When you see this much red on a map, you know it's going to be a hot weekend. According to the National Weather Service of Duluth, we will see above normal temperatures and high humidity values.

Saturday and Sunday will be hit hard, with temperatures in the 90s. Some areas may even reach heat indices in the triple digits. Lake Superior won't even save you from the heat this time around.

Heat Dome Will Keep Things Hot In Minnesota & Wisconsin This Weekend

A heat dome, simply put, is a high pressure system that traps heat and humidity. As a result, high temperatures linger in an area and there is limited precipitation to cool things off. This will be the case for the midwest this weekend and into next week.

At the time of writing, most of the Duluth area is under an Extreme Heat Watch, with heat indices between 103 to 108 degrees across the state each afternoon. As of now, the watch begins Saturday (June 21st) afternoon and continues through Sunday evening.

Even in the evenings, temperatures will remain hot in the mid 70s and 80s. Make sure you drink plenty of water and limit your time outdoors. Check up on relatives and neighbors as well, and stay in an air-conditioned room if possible.

At the time of writing, most of Minnesota is under this Extreme Heat Watch, and will remain under some sort of heat-related advisory for most of the weekend, including St. Louis, Carlton, Aitkin, Lake and Itasca Counties.

The watch has also been extended across state lines to Superior and Bayfield. It also includes the Apostle Islands and the Boundary Waters. Things change quickly when it comes to severe weather so make sure you have a way to monitor the situation all weekend long.
