The Superior landfill is nearing capacity and will soon be closed to the public for dumping. I heard from a city worker who mentioned that it would be happening sometime this fall, and when I recently visited the landfill it was confirmed.

The landfill is expected to reach capacity by 2026.

The landfill is almost full and is expected to close completely in 2026. I recently made a lot of trips to the landfill and it's quite clear that there isn't much room left. The landfill has been used not just by Superior, but also by WLSSD, and communities up the North Shore. WDIO reported last year that 18 semi-trucks a day from WLSSD dump their garbage at the Superior Landfill.

The landfill will close to the public soon.

It's not exactly clear when the landfill will close to the public. I asked the worker at the dump if the rumors were true, and they confirmed that it would be closed to the public when the city deems it necessary, which likely will come sometime this fall.

There have been discussions about a new alternate landfill being constructed, but no real solid plans have been made public about a new dump site.

Meanwhile, some communities are bracing for the overall closure in 2026 by coming up with plans to reduce waste. Boreal.org reports that Cook County and Lake County have created the Northeast Communities Recycling & Composting Collaborative to reduce waste, recycle, compost, and use other methods to go greener.
