St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities across Minnesota issued hundreds of citations during the state’s latest seat belt law enforcement effort.

The most recent Click-It-Or-Ticket campaign began May 19 and wrapped up on June 1. 

It coincided with the beginning of the so-called “100 deadliest days” on the state’s roads, which is a time of year when authorities say traffic fatalities tend to spike.

Last year 106 people who lost their lives on the state’s roads were not buckled up. That’s a large increase from 79 unbuckled deaths in 2023, according to preliminary numbers from state authorities. 

Over 1,600 Tickets Issued During Minnesota's Most Recent Statewide Seatbelt Enforcement Campaign

A news release issued by the Minnesota Office of Traffic Safety says law enforcement across the state issued 1,598 seat belt citations and 85 child restraint citations during the enforcement effort.

Director of the State Office of Traffic Safety Mike Hanson said, “there are still many who put themselves and their children at risk. For them, enforcement and education can prevent the worst from happening.”

266 agencies participated in the campaign. St. Paul Police issued the most citations of any agency in the state at 255.

The State Patrol District in northeastern Minnesota wrote the most tickets of any agency outside of the Twin Cities, issuing 128 citations. 

The Rochester Police Department made six seatbelt violation citations. The Olmsted Sheriff’s Office wrote 11 tickets for seatbelt violations and issued a pair of tickets for child restraint violations, according to the office of traffic safety. 

The State Patrol's District is southeast Minnesota wrote 19 tickets for seatbelt violations.
