A well-known national chain is making big changes in an effort to survive. After struggling for years, the company has announced it will be shutting down over 200 locations, including several in Minnesota.

Many shoppers will soon have to travel farther to visit their favorite store, as this major retailer prepares to close more than half of its locations across the country.

JoAnn Fabrics Files for Bankruptcy, Plans to Close Hundreds of Stores

JoAnn Fabrics recently filed for bankruptcy for the second time in less than a year. As part of its restructuring plan, the company has asked the court for approval to close 533 of its 800 stores nationwide.

12 Minnesota Locations Slated for Closure

Minnesota will lose 12 of its 21 JoAnn Fabrics locations. Stores on the closure list include Woodbury, Willmar, Shakopee, Maple Grove, Mankato, Hutchinson, Hibbing, Faribault, Elk River, Coon Rapids, Bemidji, and Apple Valley.

Some stores will remain open, including locations in Duluth, Alexandria, Brainerd, St. Cloud, Rochester, and select Twin Cities areas. However, the long-term future of these stores remains uncertain as the company restructures.

No Timeline for Closures Yet

JoAnn Fabrics has not provided specific details on when these closures will begin or how many employees will be affected. In a statement sent to the Associated Press, the company acknowledged the impact of the decision, saying, "This was a very difficult decision to make, given the major impact we know it will have on our Team Members, our customers, and all of the communities we serve."
