Kyle Sloter Shares Bitter, Conspiratorial Take On Making Teams

A former Minnesota Vikings quarterback recently went on a self-described "bitter" social media rant with conspiracy theory vibes about the quarterback position on team depth charts.

Kyle Sloter, who spent two stints with the Minnesota Vikings as a backup, shared a message on X on August 31 that suggested that making the team as a backup quarterback is more about who you know than how good you are.

In the message (seen below), Sloter says he "should have worked harder to be friends with the starter", claiming that having a good relationship with the starting quarterback is more important than quality play and being competitive.

He leverages this claim based on his theory that teams value "average backup play" and a good relationship over a quality backup to avoid a situation where the starter feels threatened.

While Sloter had some flashy moments in preseason action with the Vikings, he only maintained two short stints with the team as part of his tenure in the NFL. Since entering the league in 2017 as a member of the Broncos, he has been with 7 different NFL teams and a couple of XFL and USFL teams.

In Sloter's first stint in the USFL, he earned some accolades including offensive player of the week and All-USFL Team in 2022. In his subsequent XFL and USFL time, he's had less sustained success.

As someone who has shown flashes, but not enough to find a more consistent home, it is somewhat easy to see how Sloter might develop a bit of bitterness about keeping a spot on a team roster. But was it due to team fit, or due to avoiding depth chart controversy?

I don't know if I believe that he is just too threatening to starters to keep around. But he seems to think so.
