Maybe there *is* something to that whole 'Minnesota Nice' thing-- because one city here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes has just been named one of the least rude in the entire country.

Playing music loudly on your speaker phone or talking loudly in public without using headphones. Cutting somebody off while in traffic. Taking up the entire aisle while you're shopping with no clue that other shoppers are trying to get around you.

The list of rude behaviors we encounter each day here in Minnesota and across the country seems to be endless, and sadly, increasing, right? It doesn't just *seem* that way, it actually *is* that way, at least according to this new survey.

The language-learning site, Preply, just surveyed residents of the 46 largest cities in the country about rude behavior and how often they witness rude acts. They then compiled a rudeness score to rank cities from the most rude to the least rude. And their results are good news for those of us who like to be polite here in the North Star State.

Because while some cities like Philadelphia, Miami, and Tampa ranked as the rudest cities in the country in 2024, Minnesota's largest city of Minneapolis placed on the other end of the survey, and is actually one of the most polite cities in the U.S.

Here are the Rudest Cities in the U.S., according to Preply:

  1. Miami, Florida
  2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  3. Tampa, Florida
  4. Louisville, Kentucky
  5. Oakland, California
  6. Boston, Massachusetts
  7. Memphis, Tennessee
  8. Las Vegas, Nevada
  9. Long Beach, California
  10. Charlotte, North Carolina

Some of the most rude behaviors exhibited by residents of those cities included a lack of self-awareness, talking loudly on a speaker-phone or watching videos or listening to music without headphones in a shared space, a lack of care for others, and not acknowledging others, Preply noted.

Meanwhile, it would appear that we're much nicer here in the Bold North. Because Minneapolis is ranked second on the Preply list of the Cities With The Least Rude Residents. In fact, only residents of Omaha, Nebraska are more polite than we are in Minnesota.

Cities With the Least Rude Residents in the U.S., according to Preply:

  1. Omaha, Nebraska
  2. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  3. San Diego, California
  4. Columbus, Ohio
  5. Kansas City, Missouri
  6. Milwaukee, Wisconsin
  7. Indianapolis, Indiana
  8. San Jose, California
  9. Raleigh, North Carolina
  10. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

A similar YouGov survey would seem to confirm the Preply survey's results. It ranked Minnesota as the 6th Most Polite State in the U.S., with 47 percent of Minnesotans saying they believe the Gopher State is more polite than other states. Hawaii was the most polite state in the U.S. according to the YouGov survey, while Rhode Island was the rudest state.
