Minnesota Governor Tim Walz Signs An Insulin Affordability Bill

Yesterday was an historic day in Minnesota as Governor Tim Walz signed an insulin affordability bill that was approved by the Minnesota Legislature the day before. The bill is called the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability act, named after Alec who died from diabetic complications due to his inability to afford insulin which he had to ration.

This Bill hits close to home for me since my son has Type 1 Diabetes and he was diagnosed when he was 11 years old. He is now 21 and thankfully has been able to get his insulin and supplies every month although there have been times when he was really stretching to be able to afford his insulin. This bill is going to help thousands of people in Minnesota stay healthy and not have to possibly sacrifice whether to have food or insulin.

According to WDIO "The legislation will allow access to a 30-day supply of insulin for a co-pay of $35, and uninsured, under-insured and those receiving Medicare will be eligible. The legislation is also expected to streamline affordable insulin in the long-term and either get manufacturers to participate in the program or fine them for non-compliance."
