It looks like today is a bad day to be a person in a leadership role with a professional sports team in Minnesota.

On the same morning it was announced that the Minnesota Twins and front office leadership figure Derek Falvey were parting ways, the Minnesota Vikings have also made a move at the top.

The Minnesota Vikings shared that General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has been relieved of his duties.

In a statement from the team, owners Mark & Zygi Wilf had the following to say on the subject:

Following our annual end-of-season organizational meetings over the last several weeks and after careful consideration, we have decided it is in the best interest of the team to move forward with new leadership of our football operations. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for Kwesi's contributions and commitment to the organization over the past four years and wish him and his family the best in the future.

Effective immediately, Executive Vice President of Football Operations Rob Brzezinski will lead our operations through the 2026 NFL Draft. Rob brings tremendous credibility and experience, understands our roster and has the ability to build consensus and rely on the expertise of our personnel and coaches. After the draft, we intend to conduct a thorough search to identify our next general manager. Building a team that can contend for championships drives us every day, and we look forward to bringing our fans the success they so deserve.

As you can see, while the team has a plan heading into the heart of offseason moves, including the NFL Draft, the journey to figure out who the next general manager will be is still ahead.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and head coach Kevin O'Connell were both hired by Minnesota in 2022 after team ownership let former GM Rick Spielman and Head Coach Mike Zimmer go at the end of the 2021 season.

In the Kwesi Adofo-Mensah and Kevin O'Connell era, the Vikings have seen two playoff appearances and two non-playoff seasons. During those two playoff seasons, the team lost in the first round of the playoffs.

Both O'Connell and Adofo-Mensah were given contract extensions early in 2025, but the team apparently now feels they want to go a different direction with their general manager.

During the tenure of the two team leaders, they have both faced criticism, particularly in those two non-playoff seasons. Of the two individuals, Kwesi certainly faced more heat from fans.

While Adofo-Mensah has a more favorable track record in acquiring free agents, his NFL Draft track record has been far more scrutinized.

While there have been some good finds in Adofo-Mensah-led drafts, including names like Jalen Nailor and Dallas Turner, picks like first-round selection Lewis Cine have haunted him.

Even the selections of Jordan Addison, who has dealt with several off-the-field issues, and quarterback J.J. McCarthy have been part of what has placed Kwesi under the microscope.

While Kwesi had front office roles with the 49ers and Browns, his job with the Vikings was his first time in the lead role as general manager.

Now the Vikings will navigate the process of not only trying to rebuild after a disappointing 2025 season, but also trying to find the right fit to lead the team's front office staff into the future.

The timeline of important offseason dates for the Vikings is coming up fast, with the NFL Combine at the end of February, free agency in March, and the NFL Draft in April.
