The death of the American shopping mall has been predicted for years, and while many centers have successfully adjusted to modern shopping habits and trends, many others did not. Some are thriving with new life, while others are meeting a destructive end.

The Northridge Mall, located in Milwaukee, opened in 1972 with anchor stores like Sears and J.C. Penney. This two-story, over one-million-square-foot mall thrived during the 1980s and early 1990s. Families flocked to its shops, food courts, and movie theaters, making it a popular destination for suburban Milwaukee.

By the 2000s, however, mall traffic dwindled as online shopping and newer retail hubs took over, leaving Northridge to struggle with disappearing tenants and shuttered anchor stores.

Official Closure and Demolition

The mall officially closed in March 2003, and now, more than 20 years later, the last of the structure has been torn down. The Milwaukee Department of City Development shared that crews pulled the final standing walls down using cables last week.

The property will soon be cleared to make room for future development. City officials plan to list the site for sale in early 2026, with redevelopment ideas including residential housing, retail spaces, light industrial use, and even public green areas.

A YouTube Destination in Wisconsin

Though abandoned for decades, Northridge became an unlikely internet sensation. It drew thousands of urban explorers and YouTubers who document forgotten places. One video from the channel The Proper People, titled Exploring the Abandoned Northridge Mall, has nearly 5 million views, keeping the memory of the mall alive even after its demolition.
