Onion Recall Expanded To Product Ingredients

The ongoing nationwide voluntary recall for red, yellow, and white onions distributed by Thompson International/Taylor Farms has expanded to include products that include them as an ingredient. Prior to this the recall only affected the product when sold as whole onions. The concern for these onions used as an ingredient match the concern over the whole product: salmonella.

According to information provided by the Food and Drug Administratoin, they've identified some specific prepared food products that include the Thompson International-distributed onions as an ingredient. At the present, those prepared food products are sold in Walmart and Kroger. A full list of identified products follows below.

It's important to note that as of this writing there have been no known reports of anyone actually getting sick from these onions. The voluntary recall has been originated out of caution. However, salmonells isn't something to brush off. According to the Food and Drug Administration:

"Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis."
