This isn't the first time a petition has been started to make the change.

Nicholas Straight started the petition on Change.org saying, "Now that the Christopher Columbus statue has been removed near the St. Paul capital in Minnesota. We should place a Prince statue there."

The statue of Columbus was pulled down by protesters yesterday at the Capitol building, shortly after it was laying on the ground a group of Minnesota State Patrol officers was called in to protect statue and crews later removed it from the grounds.

Straight suggest that a statue of Prince playing his signature purple guitar during the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2007 should be erected in its place.

There is no doubt that Prince should have a prominent statue somewhere in the state, and the Capital seems like a good place, or maybe near First Ave. in Minneapolis, either place is good with me.

Well over 1,000 people have signed the petition at this point, with comments saying, "

Prince is something MN should be proud to call our own. Columbus has no tie to MN outside an allegiance to the glorification of colonialism", and "Prince is as Minnesota as Scandinavians, gophers and hockey. When you think Minnesota, you think Prince."
