Lucas Weme is a Pre-Med student at UMD was has taken EMT classes in the past ended up having to perform life saving CPR on his father Robert Weme who went into cardiac arrest last week at his home in Saginaw MN. Lucas performed what is called bystander CPR. Captain Brian Black from the Duluth Fire Department said that around 45% of people who receive this type of CPR survive.

Ironically enough Robert was a paramedic for 26 years and so obviously he knows the importance of being trained in CPR. He went on to say that he is incredibly proud of his son and his family in general for reacting so quickly, and in the end saving his life.

Robert spoke with CBS3 about his experience:

I don't remember a lot of it. I was in the kitchen and next thing I knew I was waking up off the floor and walked outside to where my family was sat down on the porch and passed out again. The next thing I knew after that was my daughter yelling at me to wake up and my son and my wife hovering over me.

Robert had collapsed several times while on the floor and began to turn blue and did not have a pulse, when Lucas jumped into action. Lucas admitted that at first he was scared but then his training kicked in and he jumped into action. I could not even imagine how scary a situation that would be since this happened to a family member but thankfully Lucas was able to keep his cool. After Robert woke up his family called 911 and he was transported to the hospital for further evaluation. He did remain in the hospital for a few days but now is home with his family feeling healthy and happy to be home enjoying the nice warm summer weather.

This is a perfect example of how important it is for everyone to learn CPR as it could save a persons life or increase their chances of survival before paramedics arrive. Also it is imperative to call 911 immediately so that continued care can be performed as soon as possible. CPR classes in Duluth are offered at The Red Cross, and Duluth Family YMCA.
