Minnesota’s Most Famous Film Returning to Theaters for One Night
You could count on one hand the number of notable movies filmed in Minnesota, and one of them just got a glow-up and will return to theaters for one night only.

A Cinematic Return for a Minnesota Classic
AMC Theatres and Dolby have teamed up to offer a one-night-only screening of Prince’s Purple Rain, featuring newly enhanced visuals and sound optimized for Dolby Cinema theaters.

The film, released in 1984, showcases Minneapolis and its suburbs and introduced the world to Prince. But it’s the music that takes center stage in Purple Rain, and with this restoration, the team at Dolby used the “5.1 multi-channel mix master” to create a faithfully remastered Dolby Atmos audio presentation.
One Night Only in Minnesota Theaters
The screening will happen for one day only, Wednesday, March 5th, and only at a couple of AMC Theatres in Minnesota: Roseville and Edina.
Engineers at Dolby digitally restored the film from an 8K scan of the original 35mm film, bringing “the vibrant neon lights of First Avenue nightclub to The Kid’s iconic guitar” to life through ultra-vivid visuals.
A Treat for Prince Fans Across Generations
Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby, said, “Devoted and new fans alike, prepare to be exhilarated by an unforgettable and unparalleled performance from one of music’s greatest of all time.”
