Someone illegally shot and killed an elk and the Sawyer County Sheriff's Department in Wisconsin is reaching out to the public for help.

The elk was shot and left on the side of the road near State Highway 77 and Forest Road 174 in Sawyer County.

The Sheriff's Department says that anyone who noticed anything strange Saturday morning between and 5 AM - 7 AM or knows anything about the poaching incident should call the WI DNR at 1-800-847-9367.

Wisconsin has an elk population of around 400 animals according to the WI DNR, this is the result of years of work bring the population back after the elk was eliminated from the state in the 1800s.
