As the federal government shutdown drags on with no resolution in sight, more and more programs are being affected by the lack of funding. One of the most significant is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP.

SNAP Funding Running Out in Minnesota

SNAP benefits are expected to run out of federal funding starting November 1, leaving more than 400,000 Minnesotans without the support they rely on for food security. While the state is using emergency funds to help cover some of the shortfall, it’s not nearly enough to fill the $70 million per month gap the program requires to operate.

Duluth Bakery Steps Up to Help

Children are among those most impacted by the funding lapse, but one Minnesota business is stepping up in a big way. Duluth’s Best Bread, with three locations across the Duluth-Superior area, is offering kids 12 and under a free loaf of day-old bread or a pastry while SNAP funding is disrupted.

Starting Tuesday, November 4, families can mention the “DBB KIDS Special” and receive the offer, no questions asked. The only requirements are that the child be present, it’s limited to one pastry or loaf per day, and the offer is for dine-in customers only. No other purchase is necessary.

Community Kindness During Hard Times

It’s a small gesture with a big heart, and it shows how local businesses can make a difference when people need it most. Duluth’s Best Bread is setting an example of generosity and community spirit that others across Minnesota may soon follow. If you can, support the local businesses that support our neighbors in times like these.
