Repeated Vandalism Raising Safety Concerns
This ongoing issue is creating serious public safety concerns, leaving open holes across the city that pose significant risks to drivers, pedestrians, and bicyclists.
Saint Paul Public Works Director Sean Kershaw stated, "This malicious behavior is unacceptable and extremely dangerous to everyone, including drivers, walkers, and bikers." Vandalism reports began in early June and have continued to increase and spread throughout the city.
The City of Saint Paul is urging anyone who sees someone tampering with a sewer grate to call 911 immediately. The city is working to replace the missing grates as quickly as possible.

City officials are also asking residents in neighborhoods that had sewer grates removed, to check any doorbell or yard cameras to see if any footage was captured of the vandals and to share that with authorities.
Removal of drain grates, or utility (manhole) covers is illegal and pose a serious risk, these covers can weigh over 150 pounds.
