Superior National At Lutsen Golf Course On North Shore Sold

A stunningly gorgeous golf course on Minnesota's North Shore has been sold to a new owner.

In the spring of 2025, Superior National at Lutsen hit the market for an asking price of $2.9 million. The 27-hole course near Lutsen Mountains ski resort has been owned by the Cook County/Grand Marais Economic Development Authority (EDA) since opening as an 18-hole course in 1992.

A combination of challenges were outlined as reasons the organization wanted to sell, including labor shortages and expensive maintenance and improvement costs facing the course.

More than $1 million in improvements were reportedly needed, including irrigation and septic system repairs, which have been underway this summer prior to the sale.

After putting the golf course on the market, nearly 50 interested potential buyers emerged last summer, with most of them being Minnesota-based individuals or companies, but some of the prospective buyers were from elsewhere in the country.

Toward the end of last summer, the Cook County/Grand Marais EDA announced they had narrowed that potential buyer list down to a small handful of prospective buyers, eventually naming a preferred buyer.

As of this week, the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal reports [PAYWALL] the deal with that preferred buyer has been completed for a final price of $1.85 million.

The new owner of Superior National at Lutsen is an individual named Brady Hatcher, the co-founder of a Minnesota company and owner of another Minnesota golf course.

Hatcher is the co-founder of a Brooklyn Park-based medical device company called Switchback Medical. In addition, he owns the Brainerd Lakes Area golf course Golden Eagle Golf Club in Fifty Lakes, Minnesota.

In buying Superior National at Lutsen, Hatcher has agreed to keep the course open to the public. In addition, he plans to keep the current staff working at the course while investing in further improvements.

Stipulations from the Cook County/Grand Marais EDA for the buyer of the course include that the property must remain a golf course and that the course must remain a public course for at least a certain number of years. Based on the way things sound right now, he intends to keep the course public.

Hatcher's other course, Golden Eagle, is a public course, but many who have been there say it has the feel of a private club. The course, which has earned many accolades, opened in 2001.

Hatcher bought the course in 2023, calling the purchase "the realization of a lifelong dream" after spending many summers visiting the area.

While owned by Hatcher, he has employed Twin Cities-based SVN Northco as the management company that operates the course.

In earlier reporting on Hatcher's interest in buying Superior National, he expressed interest in using SVN Northco to manage this course as well.

While they won't call it a mini golf course, it kind of is. This 18-hole course boasts all real grass playing surfaces, natural obstacles like sand traps, boulders, and water, just like a real golf course.

The whole course looks and feels like a shrunken golf course, and it plays like one, too! The holes are long! The shortest hole is 57 feet, the longest is 125 feet, and the whole 18-hole course plays 1,662 feet.
