A Town Of 800 Just Claimed A Spot in Minnesota’s Hotel Top Five
When it comes to hotels, they typically cluster around major tourist and business hubs like Downtown Minneapolis or Bloomington near the Mall of America and MSP Airport. In fact, four of the five largest hotels in Minnesota are located in those areas.
But the state’s second-largest hotel sits in a place many people would not expect.
A Massive Hotel in a Minnesota Town of 823
Located in Welch, Minnesota, a town of just 823 people according to the most recent census, Treasure Island Resort & Casino is home to a three-tower, 788-room hotel. That is nearly one hotel room for every resident in town.

The property ranks just behind the Hilton Minneapolis in Downtown Minneapolis, which has 821 rooms. That makes Treasure Island the second-largest hotel in the entire state.
How the Top Five Stack Up in MN
Rounding out Minnesota’s five largest hotels are the Hyatt Regency Minneapolis with 640 rooms and the Minneapolis Marriott City Center with 584 rooms, both located in Downtown Minneapolis. The Radisson Blu Mall of America in Bloomington comes in with around 500 rooms.
That means Welch, Minnesota, stands alone outside the Twin Cities core when it comes to hosting one of the state’s biggest hotel properties.

Treasure Island’s hotel is made up of three towers named Wolf, Eagle, and Buffalo. Each offers varying levels of amenities and comfort. The Buffalo Tower recently reopened as the premier hotel experience at the resort and casino.
Featuring 246 rooms, the updated tower introduces newly designed spaces including family suites, executive suites overlooking the casino floor, and spacious king and queen rooms. In a press release, Treasure Island says the new rooms are designed to meet the expectations of today’s guests, blending style, comfort, and convenience in every detail.
Big Expectations for the Year Ahead
The resort expects the refreshed hotel tower to be busy. Treasure Island estimates that approximately 120,000 guests will stay in the newly upgraded hotel during its first year.
While Minneapolis and Bloomington may dominate Minnesota’s hotel landscape, Welch has quietly secured its place near the top. For a town with fewer than 1,000 residents, hosting the second-largest hotel in the state is no small feat.
