Tyson Foods, Inc. has added product to its nationwide recall of ready-to-eat, processed chicken.  Thirty individual Tyson products are now included in the recall, as the company added an additional 500,000 pounds to the effort, increasing the total number of pounds of chicken involved to 9-million.

The additional Tyson products were added to the recall on July 8.  According to news sources, the chicken was manufactured between December 26, 2020 and April 23, 2021:

"There are 30 different Tyson-made products covered by the recall. They are all precooked frozen chicken products (including diced chicken, chicken strips, chicken wings, pulled chicken, and chicken pizza). Nearly all of the items were for sale under the Tyson brand name, but the recall also includes products from other brands that contain chicken produced by Tyson. The other brands are Casey's General Store, Jet's Pizza, Little Caesars, and Marco's Pizza. While almost half of all the recalled products are 10-pound bags of Tyson chicken, the recalled packages range in weight from 12 ounces to 40 pounds."

Since our earlier article, an additional person has reported becoming sick; all three have been hospitalized.  There has been one death reported from the listeria concerns.

Consumers are able to look at the full and complete list of Tyson ready-to-eat (RTE) products by clicking here.  In general, they include packages containing whole chicken breasts, diced chicken breasts, and chicken strips for fajitas. These particular Tyson ready-to-eat chicken products "were shipped nationwide to retailers and institutions, including hospitals, nursing facilities, restaurants, schools, and Department of Defense locations".

The issue with the Tyson chicken products is the concern over listeria.  The common symptoms of Listeriosis include:

  • Confusion
  • Convulsions
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Headaches
  • Loss of balance
  • Muscle aches
  • Stiff neck

Individuals who believe that they have some of the recalled Tyson chicken products in their refrigerator or freezer are urged not to consume it; instead, return the affected product to the store where it was purchased.  All food safety questions can be directed at the USDA Meat and Poultry Hotline:  1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854).
