The recall of lettuce due to Cyclospora concerns is expanding.  The Food and Drug Administration has announced that Fresh Express is recalling a limited quauntity of their Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad from select stores around the region out of an abundance of caution in regards to Cyclospora.  The Marketside bagged lettuce salad product is available for sale at Walmart.

The company is stressing the fact that the recall is being done on a completely voluntary basis and at this time there are no known links to anyone getting sick from the Marketside lettuce products.  The recall affects the bagged salads sold in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Specifically, the products being recalled are all product codes of Marketside Classic Iceberg Salad, sold in 12- and 24-ounce packages with "best-if-used-by" dates of May 19 to July 04.  These bagged salads were distributed to select stores between June 1 and June 21.

The Walmart stores that were delivered the recalled bagged salads have already removed them from their shelves.  If you believe that you have one of the salads in your possession, you're asked to not consume it and to call the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center toll-free at 800-242-5472 Monday through Friday during the hours of 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM Eastern time.

"Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection caused by the Cyclospora parasite. A person may become infected after ingesting contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue. The infection is treated with antibiotics and most people respond quickly to treatment."
