WATCH: Water Pouring Down 3rd Avenue West, Flooding Superior Street In Downtown Duluth Monday

Water was seen pouring from the ground, welling up from the sidewalk along 3rd Avenue West, right alongside the Holiday Center in Duluth on Monday afternoon. The water caused minor flooding across Superior Street and down onto Michigan Street.

By 4:40 pm on Monday afternoon, city crews had arrived to respond to what appeared to be a water main break in the area immediately next to the Holiday Center in Downtown Duluth.

As seen in the video below, captured just before 4:00 pm on Monday, there appeared to be one primary location where water was welling up out of the sidewalk. The water did smell like treated (tap) water, not like wastewater, further suggesting it may was a water main break.

There was a secondary, smaller location on 3rd Avenue West near the intersection with Superior Street where water had also started coming up out of the pavement. Witnesses on the scene reported that they had seen this second upwelling of water several minutes after the first water source appeared.

There is no visible work being done in the area that would appear to be a cause for the breaking of a water main by construction crews.

This moving water, flowing down the hill, had dislocated some bricks used to pave the street and sidewalk along 3rd Avenue West.

Crews had the flowing water stopped by about 4:40 pm, but a mess remained. Dislocated bricks and dirt and rocks washed down onto the street remained as crews tended to the water situation.
