Sometimes, love doesn't work out, even if you work at it. For Anna Faris and now ex-husband Chris Pratt, eight years of marriage came to an end last Sunday, Aug. 6 when they announced their separation. The split has been kept relatively quiet and cordial, with both asking for privacy and respect for the sake of their 4-year-old son, Jack.

Now, Faris has spoken in a rare instance since, offering advice on romance to listeners of her Unqualified podcast this Tuesday (Aug. 15). She stressed the value of independence and the little time we have to enjoy ourselves.

"Life is too short to be in relationships where you feel this isn’t fully right or somebody doesn’t have your back, or somebody doesn’t fully value you,” Faris said. “Don’t be afraid to feel your independence if things aren’t right."

Faris spoke of her relationship as a sort of checking-off on a list of life's milestones. She mentioned that she hadn't ever really taken time to be on her own.

"If that would be the final piece of advice I could give you, that would be know your worth, know your independence," Faris said. "There's so much life experience. I hope you get to live it all and experience a whole lot of people.”

Her poise and respect for both the value of her marriage and the value of leaving it is commendable. Eight years — four of them raising a child — is nothing to blink at, and both Faris and Pratt have surely got a lot of feelings left to process. Faris' podcast may be called Unqualified, but we'd wager she's got a bit more wisdom than she admits.

Faris closed the episode by letting her listeners know how much they meant to her.

Hey, dear listeners,” she said. “I just want to thank you all so much for all the love I’ve been receiving, and I truly love you.”
